Group fitness classes are an excellent way to start or augment your workout routine. This experience can help you feel more motivated and energized than working out on your own, while also providing a great social experience you’ll enjoy. If you’ve never taken a group fitness class before, keeping a few simple tips in mind can help you feel calm and ready for your first fitness class before you ever step in the door.
Talk to Your Instructor
Your instructor is there to help you excel and enjoy your fitness class. If possible, arrive a few minutes early and tell the instructor it will be your first class experience. The instructor will be able to give you the best tips on where to stand and how to get the most from your workout to ensure you love every minute of the session.
Stay with Simple Moves
Group workout classes typically cater to a large range of fitness levels, and your instructor may offer variations on each move during the class. Stick with the simplest moves during your first class, even if you think you can perform the modifications—simple moves will not only help you prevent injuries, they’ll give you a chance to learn the more difficult moves without needing to perform them yet.
Take Care of Yourself
You are responsible for your wellbeing during class. If you feel overwhelmed, are in pain, or need a drink of water to continue, don’t be afraid to move to the edge of the classroom and take a moment for yourself. “Pushing through it” can raise your risk of injury and won’t help you get the workout you want, but taking a moment to care for yourself will allow you the breather you need to rejoin the group.
